Fruit coupon

This coupon comes from a box of cookies. “Nilla Wafers” is a brand name of a type of small cookie (or biscuit) that is actually called Vanilla Wafers. The coupon says that if you buy the Nilla Wafers, you get 55 cents off bananas. This is to create what US advertising calls a “tie-in”. There were two expiration dates: July 31, 2002 and Jan. 31, 2003. They want you to think of Nilla Wafers and bananas. There is a type of banana pudding that uses Nilla Wafers in the recipe. The small emblem that says “Publix” stands for a chain of grocery stores in the southern US. Publix stores were just in Lakeland, Fl. Lakeland is Publix’s headquarters and hometown large grocery store until a few years ago. They have now expanded into Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina and Tennessee.

Tie-in means you tie (like tie a knot) 2 different products. It is an advertising word. They want you to think of bananas when you buy Nilla Wafers, so that is a “tie-in“.
There are banana labels that say “Got Milk?” That is a tie-in between milk and bananas.
There are banana labels that say “Try Jello Pudding“. That is a tie-in between pudding and bananas.
